This day in history: General Aidid's cat and mouse game with UNOSOM II

Hiiraan Online By Samira Sawlani Monday, June 17, 2013 For decades Somalia has undergone turmoil and instability due to conflict, civil war, and humanitarian disasters. There are many dates, occasions and anniversaries that the current and future generations of Somalia will mark as moments which altered history or which need to be remembered as a way to honour numerous lives that were lost. 17th June is one such day; it is this twenty years since the United Nations ordered the arrest of General Mohamed Farrah Aidid, an event which determined the fate of many innocent and guilty individuals. It was after this date that the conflict between General Aidid’s militia and the United Nations Operation in Somalia (UNOSOM) escalated, resulting in unexpected levels of death and disorder. Gen. Mohamed F. Aidid - Photo AFP In 1991 Siad Barre's government was overthrown, the Somali National Army disbanded and the country headed to civil war. A number of opposition gro

A Proxy War Against Somaliland By Gregory R. Copley

By Gregory R. Copley | Sat, 08 June 2013 02:57 | 7 Benefit From the Latest Energy Trends and Investment Opportunities before the mainstream media and investing public are aware they even exist. The Free Oilprice.com Energy Intelligence Report gives you this and much more. Click here to find out more. Gregory R. Copley Egypt’s Morsi Government has initiated a return to covert war against Ethiopia, which controls the source of the Blue Nile, Egypt’s and Sudan’s principal source of water. The result will almost certainly lead to an increased level of insecurity in the strategic Red Sea/Suez sea lane and in the upper Nile riparian states, such as South Sudan, with some impact on global energy markets. Certainly it promises to see greater instability in the Horn of Africa at a time when Western media portrayals hint at a return to stability in, for example, Somalia. This amounts to a full — even expanded — resumption of the indirect war to isolate Ethiopia politically and economically and t
“The Future Is Coming, The Future Is Coming,” Warns The Paul Revere Of Trends By Gerald Celente KINGSTON, NY, 24 April 2013 — The future is rushing toward us at a speed never before experienced. Can anyone forecast what the future will look like and what it will bring? For two decades The Trends Journal has been doing just that, writing “History Before it Happens!” Take a look at today’s news. It is a matter of record that we predicted just such headlines in our trend forecasts, long before they became news. On the economic front we have been forecasting systemic global failure for years. Contrary to mainstream financial industry and government experts, the insiders and pundits, we have insisted that the various cheap money/imposed austerity policies designed to restore “growth” would, at best, provide no more than temporary relief. Who else do you know that warned of bank holidays and predicted that recessions in troubled countries would spiral into full-blown depr

Egyptian politicians caught in on-air Ethiopia dam gaffe

Egyptian politicians caught in on-air Ethiopia dam gaffe By Ahmed Maher BBC News   The Blue Nile is one of two major tributaries of the Nile Egyptian politicians are embarrassed after being caught suggesting hostile acts against Ethiopia to stop it from building a dam across the Blue Nile. They were inadvertently heard on live TV proposing military action at a meeting called by President Mohammed Morsi. Ethiopia last week started diverting the flow of the river in preparation for the $4.2bn hydroelectric dam. On completion, the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam would be Africa's largest. It is expected to produce 6,000 megawatts, and its reservoir is scheduled to start filling next year. Apology As the participants did not know that the meeting was being aired live by state TV, they spoke their minds unreservedly. Their suggestions centred around military action as a decisive response to what one of them called a "declaration of war". One of the politician

The Dividends of Strong National Government: A Policy Shift Towards Somalia

"One of the key objectives is to move to an arrangement in which there is a sovereign Somali voice speaking for the Somali people," Ambassador James C. Swan, the US Special Representative for Somalia, in London on May 7, 2013. (US State Department) by Abdi Dirshe The United States Government and other global actors have finally recognized that the support of legitimate strong Somali State offers the best opportunity to address the mounting security and development challenges in the country. As a result, the UN and other international organizations have shifted their engagement with Somalia. This new policy ends the previous dual-track approach that treated regional-clan-based actors and the Somali national leaders as equals in all affairs of Somalia. The dual-track tactic has proven to undermine the emergence of national authority due to the erroneous assumption that the Somali conflict was based on clan violence. As one expert noted, regional observers and so-called expe

Wisdom and Insight from a Founding Father

Wisdom and Insight from a Founding Father In an effort to satisfy the distinguished readers of this blog (around 2,500 of them since its launch few months back), we hereby share with you ‘a food for thought’ ,and wisdom from the late President Egal’s unique mind. Egal was the founding father and the architect who engineered the modern day democratic Somaliland. He served two terms between 1993 to 2001 as a president of post conflict Somaliland when he died in a hospital in South Africa. Among the key achievements Somaliland attained during his tenure and under his thoughtful and visionary leadership included, but not limited to, the drafting, approving and referendum of the constitution, demobilization of militia, disarmament, foundation of political parties, printing of the Somaliland Shilling, institutionalization of government ministries, and and unprecedented effort towards shaping Somaliland’s contemporary relationship with neighboring countries and International Community.

A Man Leaves A Name !!

A Man Leaves A Name !! Short Story By Mohamed Yassin Hassan The day has started with blessing wind and bright sunshine and gorgeous morning. The inhabitants were expecting a typical normal day but the area was a no man’s land. Skirmishes used to happen recently but yet face to face showdown was not expected. It was October 17, 1984 ‘the year of grace’, out of the blue the blessing wind changed into a hell on earth. Gun fire and the sound of explosives overwhelmed their ears. They believed they were all going to heaven unafraid to die but ready to sacrifice, a cause worth to die. He and his fighters were determined to help their people lift the humiliation and discrimination they endured for all most two decades. It was a time to show courage and braveness to wade into the enemy. He told his brave fighters to believe in Allah and remain their trenches. The few Mujahidin men were outnumbered and equipped poorly, few RBG’s and
